Reflections from Zziba Village: Loss and Hope

In the quiet village of Zziba, nestled near the shores of Lake Victoria in Entebbe, the first half of 2024 brought with it a mixture of hope and heartbreak. As the new year unfolded, our community rallied together in an inspiring show of solidarity to uplift families facing hardships. From food drives to educational support initiatives, we sought to foster resilience and empowerment among our neighbors.
But amidst these efforts, tragedy struck.

On the fateful day of April 6th, 2024, Zziba Village was shaken to its core by the loss of one of our own to rabies. This devastating disease claimed the life of a beloved member of our community, leaving behind a grieving husband, young children, and a village in mourning. This young mother was not just a community member but also a dear friend of mine. She succumbed to the disease after being bitten by a dog, a too-common occurrence in Uganda where rabies is sadly endemic.
Rabies, a disease prevalent across Uganda, continues to take a heavy toll on lives and livelihoods. Many cannot afford the necessary treatment, resulting in unimaginable suffering and often tragic outcomes. It's a stark reality that underscores the urgent need for accessible healthcare.
As I reflect on these past months and come to terms with the loss, I am determined to transform this tragedy into a force for positive change. While the pain of losing my dear friend remains, I am committed to working tirelessly to prevent such heartbreaking losses in the future.
Thank you,
Priscilla.
